Finding yourself, An Interview with Tobi Oloyede

Finding yourself.  What does it mean to find self, Why is it even important? How can I find myself? These are some of the insights to learn from this interview I had with the delectable Tobi Oloyede.

What does finding self mean?

Finding yourself means self discovery, coming to know the person called you. Knowing your strengths, Weakness, Limitations, Core values, character etc. Knowing what makes You You and the unique thing about you. Finding the You beyond what everyone else thinks.

Why does finding myself matter so much?

Finding self is essential because you will always be with you till the rest of your life.  So why not get to know you?

You really cannot live your utmost potential if you do not know you. You will keep making assumptions and most likely live under such assumptions, which will rarely give you joy. And the interesting thing is that the way you perceive yourself is the way you will portray yourself and eventually the way people will perceive you.

Finding yourself is also linked to utilising your potential and eventually fulfilling your God-given purpose. Finding yourself will help you seek and answer these questions:

  • Why are you you here on earth?
  • What you are created to do?
  • What tools/ resources are available to help you fulfil your purpose?

How do I find myself?

Finding self is a conscious effort. It takes you being deliberate to be friends with you and wanting to know you. This happens by self exploration. A point we come to really paying attention to ourselves by having inner conversations with ourselves, reviewing how we approach and handle things. To do this:

  • Be flexible, choose to know you
  • Be friends with you.

We live in such a fast paced world that always wants us to put attention on other people, places, things, events, get busy but afford us less time to find self.

How do I know if I have found myself?

This is a long journey that will continue for the rest of our lives.  There is actually no point we come to to say we have known everything about ourselves.  But for reference, the moment we can look into the mirror and draw up a statement to define ourselves, what we think we are and are capable of doing, how we feel we will relate under any and every circumstance, then we can say we have found ourselves.

Some pointers can also be:

  • What are the core values that will guide my life and operations?
  • What are the things I will not be found doing at any point in time?
  • What will I not allow into my space?
  • What are the things my heart desires and gravitates towards?
  • What makes meaning to me?
  • Who am I and what do I want to be called?
  •  What are the things that gives me Joy or otherwise?

In Conclusion

Finding yourself is a personal journey  that everyone needs to embark on to attain fulfilment in life. It takes being deliberate and conscious doing and attaining this everyday.
