This article – Light up, beyond the four walls of the church, was beautifully written by my namesake and sister, Dr. Olawunmi Adewole. Dr. Hepzibah as she loves to be called is a passionate Jesus girl, who understands the truth of God’s word and translates it beyond the four walls of the church. She is an astute creative writer, public speaker and the brain behind Jesus girls network international. She demonstrates her calling beyond the fours walls of the church as she serves as a medical practitioner with special interest in children and also mentors women on how they can fully live up their potential. This post captures her words and works. Please read below and be challenged, inspired to do more with your calling.
While I was preparing this topic, a scripture popped up in my mind. Matthew 5:14-16
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden either do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Who we are as believers
As a body of Christ, we are light and the place for light to manifest is not in light, it is in darkness. You are not in the church for the sake of the Church, you are in the Church so that your light can shine in the world. Whenever people talk about calling and ministry, most of us are thinking of 5-fold ministry of Apostles and prophets and evangelists and pastors and teachers, those who will stand on a podium to minister. I am here to tell you that ministry is not all about that, we are called in this generation to occupy to the ends of the earth, to occupy the finance industry, to occupy in business, in skill acquisition, in creative development, in modeling, in fashion, in photography in medicine, in law and in education, to mention a few. We are called as Corporate Jesus to always show forth the glory of God.
How we can win beyond the four walls of the church
To win beyond the four walls of the church, we need people who will give top-notch quality in fashion, those who will deliver awesome Healthcare services, who will pray in tongues for three hours before going to deliver a lecture on behalf of their logistics company and those who will be like Joseph and use their wisdom to save nations from corruption and destruction as a result of famine and mismanagement of resources. Those who will give sound advice to bring nations out of economic crises. This is what it truly means to win beyond the four walls of the church.
Also, we need people who will wake up in the morning with ideas that will bring technological advancement to the world at large and still stand to give God all the glory and not those who will only be Christians on Sundays. We need people who will not misrepresent Christ, those who do not lie or steal or take a bribe or misappropriate public funds. When Jesus said occupy till I come, He’s not just talking about the four walls of the church, he is saying, bring men into the kingdom by the kindness you show to your subordinate at work, the excellence with which you carry out tasks, your exemplary leadership skills, your wisdom and then mentor people and build them up.
The honest truth!
Jesus needs you to hold that triple degree and finish summa cum laude each time because like Daniel, he is seeking to bring you before Kings and not mere men to showcase His glory, and when you get there, you will not disappoint him. You will be first an ambassador of God’s Kingdom because you will recognize that He brought you thereby His hands. We must stop boxing ourselves into a corner. Tara Fela-Durotoye, for instance, continues to uphold Christian principles despite being all out there in the world doing makeup. She is not just making powder and lipstick, she is mentoring people, showcasing excellence and empowering the younger generation using principles she has learned from Scriptures. There are other examples of men and women doing great stuff, those we are aware of and those we are not aware of. Your career, business, or skills and your ministry are not mutually exclusive, everything is hinged on your walk with God so let us arise and take our place.
You have a calling and it is not just about standing on a podium, go into that industry and make disciples for Jesus. Don’t be discouraged and don’t get carried away, always remember your source and that you’re an ambassador. I leave you with these words:
Don’t just stay on the mountain, by the time you come back, take that online course, start writing that book, apply for that job and make Jesus proud!
